Fireworks,还有另外一个美丽的名字,是Pyrotechnics. 这个词是来自希腊语pyro, 意思是火,也有燃烧的含义;希腊语的technic, 意思是艺术或者技术。拼在一起便是烟火。
时期,早先是古人在焚竹之时,由“劈啪”声响而命名,后来唐宋时代火药的发明和使用促进了爆竹的进步。
最早的爆竹真的是竹子:
Bamboo长得很快,产生pockets of air 和sap in the stem, 这两个部分在加热时会扩张并爆炸。这个过程就是:
A fast-growing bamboo creates pockets of air and sap in the stem, which expand and burst when heated. On the fire, it heated up, turned black, and finally exploded, causing a loud “boom” and frightening people nearby.
在人们发现爆竹可以发出的响声后,竹子的用途越来越多,“爆竹声中一岁除,春风送暖入屠苏”。
People began burning bamboo at parties, celebrations, and special occasions like weddings. A loud “boom” was a kind of good fortune to people in Chinese culture.
隋末唐初,有了gunpowder的记载。中唐时期出现了最早的firework. 先是firecracker的出现,在bamboo tube里面塞满由火药等物品制成的化学compounds, 点燃后便是firecracker. 聪明的古人又将承载compounds的bamboo tube换成了其他的容器,各种container with an open end, 这样会产生明亮的火焰,火花和浓烟。但是那时的early firework是在战争中用来吓跑敌人,还没有被当作艺术品来欣赏。
