The best way to solve traffic and transportation problem is to encourage people to live in cities rather than suburbs and countryside. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Introduction
<独立主格结构写背景引入> With traffic congestion and road accidents intensifying, some propose that the most effective approach is to motivate people to dwell in cities rather than outskirts. Personally, I regard this proposal as indefensible and even preposterous.
Ø intensify vt./vi.
Ø outskirt n.
Ø indefensible adj.
Ø preposterous adj.
Body 1
It is essential to try to understand why some people might advocate such a proposal. Once people live in cities with infrastructure adjacent to the residential area, their commuting distance will therefore be reduced to a large extent. In this case, commuters are more likely to opt for other travelling modes, such as walking, cycling, and taking public transport, instead of driving their private cars. Naturally, the number of vehicles on road will diminish, thus alleviating traffic and transportation problem to some degree. However, the aforementioned arguments in effect can hold no water. Instead, such action fuels traffic congestion, as cities will become intensely crowded and populated. City-dwellers flood into certain places during similar periods, which thus will incur slower traffic flows.
Ø adjacent to adj. 邻近
Ø commuter n.
Ø opt vi. 选择(opt for sth.; opt to do sth.)
Ø alleviate vt. 缓解
Ø fuel vt. 加剧
Ø be intensely crowded and populated
Ø flood vi.
Ø incur vt.
Body 2
As a matter of fact, people who support this proposal mistakenly view longer travelling distance as the predominantcontributor to this problem. In reality, heavy traffic hinges on complex reasons, with high population density standing out. To illustrate, if residential areas are relocated and scattered, with each equipped with basic amenities, including hospitals, schools, shopping malls, etc., fewer residents will travel within certain areas. This thus can effectively address the problems of roads teeming with vehicles and public transport packed with commuters. / Besides, other remedies can also be put on agenda, including optimising road design, bettering public transit, and meanwhile encouraging working professionals to travel during off-peak hours.
Ø predominant adj.
Ø contributor n.
Ø scatter vt. 分散
Ø amenity n.
Ø teem with sb./sth. v. 充满…
Ø remedy n.
Ø put sth. on agenda 把…
Ø optimise vt. 优化
04
In conclusion, migration to cities is far from perfection. A constructive approach to resolving the traffic issue will have to involve relocating certain public institutions and facilities, bettering the road system, and upgrading the public transport network.
