英文中有很多有意思的词汇，比如在之前的推文中提到的“rape flower”不是字面意思而是“油菜花”，“rain on me”不是被雨淋而是“向我吐苦水”。今天也来学习一个有趣的表达：manhole。

manhole
manhole是指（地下管线或下水道供人出入检修的）检修孔，检查井，也就是下水道出入孔。常设于城市的排水管道交汇处，方便工作人员检查和疏通管道。
英文释义：a covered opening in a road that a worker can enter in order toreach underground pipes, wires, or drains that need to beexamined or repaired.
e.g. The workers have examined all the manholes in the city.  工人们已经检查了城市里所有的下水道出入孔。
井盖可以说成“a manhole cover”。
be in a hole
be in a hole指的是“陷入困境，处于窘境”的意思，英文释义为：to be in a difficult or an embarrassing situation.
e.g. We've lost the order and we're in a bit of a hole. 我们失掉了订单，处境有些困难。
如果把量词“a”修改为定冠词“the”，“be in the hole”又是另外一个意思了，它与“in debt”同义，理解为“欠债，亏空”。
e.g. After selling all its assets, the bank was still a million dollars in the hole. 卖掉所有资产之后，那家银行仍然欠债100万美元。
还有一个“play in the hole”，指的是“（足球比赛中）处于防守队员之前，其他前卫和前锋之后的位置”。
e.g. Although Mulumbu plays most of the game in the hole, he pushes into the box to support the strikers whenever possible. 
make a hole in something
make a hole in something不是弄个洞出来，而是说在某件东西上花了不少的钱，英文释义为“to reduce an amount of money by a lot”。
e.g. The trip made a big hole in our savings but I'm glad we went. 这次旅行把我们的积蓄花光了，但我很高兴我们去了。
与这个表达有点类似的是“burn a hole in your pocket”，表面意思是口袋里烧出了一个洞，言外之意是钱都从洞里掉了身上一分不剩，引申为有多少钱花多少钱，比喻一个人花钱不节制。
e.g. Monthly living cost in this big city can burn a hole in your pocket. 这个城市每月生活费用支出就足以让你的口袋见底。
