    First Campbell received an elbow to the eye from Benjani Mwaruwari 40 seconds after the interval, then Svetoslav Todorov backed into him, causing blood to stream from his nose.

    "He had a cut on his eyelid, he has a bloody nose," said Arsenal's manager Arsène Wenger.

    "I don't know if it is broken, we have to check that."

    The England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has indicated that he will demand players prove their fitness before selecting the final 23 to travel to Germany for this summer's tournament and time is running out for the luckless Campbell. Having returned after a series of ankle and toe injuries, and with the spotlight having been turned on his mental state after his retreat from the 3-2 defeat by West Ham on February 1, this had been Campbell's return to Arsenal's first team.

    Wenger was unsure whether Campbell would be passed fit for Saturday's match against West Bromwich at Highbury but believed he had done enough in an assured performance to demonstrate his suitability for Eriksson.

    "I don't know if he will be available on Saturday, anyway we're changing the team every two games," said Wenger. "I feel he played very well physically in the first half. In the second I think he was handicapped a bit by his injury. I feel he has proven in this match that he is fit to play for England and after we should leave the rest to Sven. But I believe he will be available for England."

    Arsenal were left with a metaphorical bloody nose after a failure to convert a string of presentable opportunities, with Emmanuel Adebayor the most culpable. After this match the gap to Tottenham is four points and the game in hand has been squandered.

    "We had the maximum effort and got a minimal result," said Wenger. "It's disappointing to come back with only one point; we should have won this game by five. We have to keep going and be positive. It's a point, a disappointing point. We want to make the maximum out of our games. Let's win on Saturday and maybe it will be in our hands again."

    Portsmouth, too, needed a win but will be far more content with a single point than the visitors. It extends their unbeaten run to five matches and, level on points with 17th-placed Birmingham, they have three home matches remaining to convert a good position for survival as the Premiership season enters its final straight. "It was a great performance in the end, a terrific performance," said their manager Harry Redknapp. "It's a great point. We played fantastically on Saturday against Blackburn and didn't get the three points but they're both top-six teams.

    "We're playing well. The results are starting to come and the confidence is starting to come at the right time. We've got three massive home games and, if we can get points, we've got a good chance.

    "Saturday's a big, big game against Middlesbrough and they've got an FA Cup semi-final the week after."

    Redknapp believes Lomana LuaLua, who indulged in a somersaulting celebration after scoring the headed goal that cancelled out Thierry Henry's first-half opener, will be fit despite injuring his ankle. 　

    "He damaged his ankle jumping up to head the ball. Yet he still did the treble somersault with pike, and then realised he had a bad ankle. I don't mind him doing that if he's scoring."
