When the verdict was announced he vaulted from his chair with such a velocity that he broke a vase on the sill and then flew through the window to land on the vegetation outside. Then he ran and hid in a vent at the side of the building. He had not escaped because his vanity could not endure prison, but because he would rather find the true murderer of his wife as an escapee than wait in prison for a crime he did not commit. And he would find the true murderer with a vengeance that would finally give vent to all the emotions that were coursing through the veins of his body.

When he was on the verge of falling out of the vent where no one had found him a woman wearing a velvet veil appeared who looked right in the vent. When she drew the veil down from her face he recognized his sister and released the valve he was holding on to.He fell down to the ground. It was a good thing too, because the machinery was just beginning to ventilate the building. He would not have been able to hide there any longer.

He and his sister refrained from verbal communication, however, and she pointed to a nearby car that they both ran to.His sister had always been versatile, but he appreciated her now more than ever. When they had competed versus each other as children she had always won.He could still hear her young voice as it sang children's verses to tease him.

She verged on tears when they hugged in the car and he quickly changed out of his prison clothes into a vest she had brought along.

"Now we need vengeance,”She said.“I won't varnish over how difficult this is going to be,Sam.But I will help you find who really killed your wife.I loved her like a sister.”
