很多同学词汇量并不少，语法基础也不错，知识体系也很完善，但就是很难在托福阅读中获得高分。我们这里暂且把25分以上定义为广大考生所要求的分数，那么同学们取得高分的瓶颈到底是什么呢？简要的说，有两点决定了学生取得高分的能力。

一、语言精确性：这个问题涵盖了很多比较琐碎的小问题，例如不同词序在语言表达上的巨大区别，意思相近两个词反映的不同语境，不起眼的虚词对句意的重要影响等等，因为同学们很难分辨这些细节对题目、选项和文章的影响，所以绝大多数同学都会常常遇到一个重要困难---觉得很多题目中，总是能先排除两个错误选项，还剩两个选项都有可能，自己只能凭感觉选一个---严重影响了正确率。而市面上的教材和多数的培训课程并不强调语言的精确性，导致了大量在这一部分有缺陷的同学难以提高分数。对于这一部分内容，由于篇幅原因，在这里笔者不做更多说明。

二、意群/句子之间的联系：很多同学在阅读的时候，只注意词，短语，句子的意思，但忽略了他们之间的关系，因此不能连贯地联系前后文，在脑海中充满了信息的碎片，但读完之后不知道段落要讲什么，也不知道作者的思路是什么。正所谓“只见树木，不见森林”。当学生处于这种困境时，特别容易被题目设计的陷阱所坑害。因为这一问题比较集中，没有语言精确性那么的琐碎，因此笔者在这里将举两例进行说明。

例1：请同学们完成这个题目再看解析

Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as we might now suppose. In the early nineteenth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notion that the best ice-box was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for it was the melting of the ice that performed the cooling. Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping the ice in blankets, which kept the ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineteenth century did inventors achieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox.

According to the information in the second paragraph, an ideal icebox would

A. completely prevent ice from melting

B. stop air from circulating

C. allow ice to melt slowly

D. use blankets to conserve ice

很多同学在做此题的时候都会在A、C、D三个选项中选择，凭借感觉不明不白地选择一个，听从命运的安排。我们来分析一下，首先，句子主干the commonsense notion发出的动词是was of course mistaken，句中that引起的定语从句是对the commonsense notion的解释，而这一串信息与A是一个意思，文中已经说了这个the commonsense notion是错的，因此A排除。句中的for链接了两个分句，请问同学们，你是怎么理解这个for的？如果你知道这个for是“因为”的意思，那么请问for后面的内容是对的还是错的？答：既然后句是在解释为什么前句为什么是错的，那么后句的内容就是对的，for后面的信息与C对应，因此C是正确答案。再往后看，nevertheless是什么意思？如果你知道这个词表示转折，那么既然转折前是正确信息，那么转折后呢？是不是按照逻辑就又应该是错误信息了，而nevertheless后面的信息与D选项一样，因此D排除。

需要注意的是，此题的讲解没有用到任何技巧，请同学们不要把这些当成是解题技巧，笔者认为这些是学生在阅读中需要理解到的语言的另一个层面，其实并不难于掌握，只是平时同学们对这一问题没有意识和练习罢了。下面再举一例。

例2：请同学们完成这个题目再看解析

Scientists have asked important questions about this explosion for more than a century. Why did it occur so late in the history of Earth? The origin of multicellular forms of life seems a relatively simple step compared to the origin of life itself. Why does the fossil record not document the series of evolutionary changes during the evolution of animals? Why did animal life evolve so quickly? Paleontologists continue to search the fossil record for answers to these questions.

According to Paragraph2, which of the following is NOT a question that paleontologists asked about the Cambrian explosion?

A.Why was the origin of life a simple step in Earth’s history?

B.Why did it take so long for multicellular organisms to develop?

C.Why did animal life evolve so rapidly?

D.Why does the fossil record lack evidence of animal evolution during that time?

很多同学都会在排除了C和D之后，在A和B当中选择。在这里，我只问大家一个问题：文中第二句“Why did it occur so late in the history of Earth?” 与第三句“The origin of multicellular forms of life seems a relatively simple step compared to the origin of life itself.”这两句话是什么关系？如果同学们能看出来第三句是解释第二句，或者说对第二句进行补充说明的，那么答案就会清晰明了了。因为既然第三句式解释第二句，那么这两句中真正的question只有第二句一句，第二句所对应的B选项是一个question，第三句对应的A选项不是一个question，题目问哪个不是question，选A为正确答案。此题中，很多同学因为看到了A选项与文章雷同度很高，而看不到句子之间的关系，导致了此题做错。

通过以上两例，希望同学们已经理解了句子关系对做题正确率的影响，找到了原因以后，同学们再去花一点时间解决困难，分数自然就会有所提升。谨记，这部分内容并不需要所谓技巧，只要有适当的练习，同学们就可以获得提升。对于托福阅读有任何其他疑问的同学，笔者将竭诚为你解答。
